What you need to know about the SMS Sender ID register
About the SMS Sender ID Register
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has established the SMS Sender ID Register (the Register) to protect people from impersonation scams. From 1 July 2026, messages that use an unregistered sender ID will be labelled “Unverified”. If you wish to send messages using a branded sender ID, that sender ID must be registered in the Register and messages must be sent through participating telecommunications providers.
What is a sender ID?
A sender ID is an 11-character alphanumeric string that is placed over the top of the mobile number. It is typically a company name or a service that the company provides and helps your recipients easily distinguish your company as the sender of the SMS. Using a sender ID will also mean that the traffic is 1-way only.
Who can register a sender ID?
The following entity types can be approved to register: individuals, bodies corporate (including companies), corporations sole, bodies politic, government entities, partnerships, unincorporated associations, trusts and superannuation funds.
Valid use case requirement
To be registered, a sender ID must relate to or be owned by the entity. That means it must match or be a contraction, abbreviation, acronym or initialism of the entity’s registered business name, company name, registered trade mark, or registered domain name.
How we can help
If you are our customer and want to use a sender ID, we (as a participating originating provider) can apply to register your sender ID on your behalf. For entities without an ABN, applications must be made through a certified provider.
Costs
Any fees or ongoing charges for registration will be made available once the ACMA finalises and communicates the fee structures.
Authorising other providers
Once your sender ID is registered, you may authorise other participating providers to send messages using that sender ID.
Non‑ABN entities
Entities without an ABN can register and send using a sender ID only via a certified originating provider or its partner. Access to the Register user interface is not provided to non‑ABN entities.
